Davidson, NC - January 27, 2010 - Second and third graders at Woodlawn School are sponsoring a Hearts for Haiti fundraiser as part of their service learning.
Students in second and third grade at Woodlawn School have been learning about the homeless during their service learning classes this year. They serve lunch once a month at Fifth Street Ministries in Statesville because they each are inspired to make a difference in the local community. When the earthquake struck Haiti, the students were saddened by the increased number of homeless in Haiti and decided to sponsor a fundraiser called Hearts for Haiti to help with the relief efforts.
Woodlawn School, founded in 2002, is an accredited, independent school in Davidson currently serving grades 1-12 and expanding to K-12 in the fall of 2010. Woodlawn's mission is to produce independent, lifelong learners who are responsible, contributing members of a diverse, global society. Service learning is an integral part of the curriculum at every grade level and students become very connected to the community organizations they serve.
Students will be selling "hearts" for $1, $3, or $5 until Valentine's Day. Students, teachers, parents, and families can purchase the "hearts" during lunches or carpool. The Hearts for Haiti campaign will culminate with a school assembly, educating students about Haiti and the relief efforts to which the Woodlawn community is contributing. All of the money will be donated to Haiti through World Vision.
