Twelve things you might not know about Woodlawn:1. Our mission statement has not changed since we opened in 2002.2. Even though we're located only 5 minutes from I-77, our campus offers 61 acres of history and natural beauty. A $2.5 million project featuring a gym and upper school building was competed in 2008. A $1 million project to build classroom and multipurpose buildings is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010. 3. Our students have earned national recognition in fields such as photography, video documentary, performance, publications, and academic achievement. 4. Our faculty, which includes several graduates from nearby Davidson College, consists of talented and dedicated educators with diverse backgrounds. 40% of our staff have already earned Masters or PhD degrees, and several more are currently in a graduate program. 5. Our upper school curriculum features 8 Advanced Placement (AP) courses. In the most recent three academic years (2007-10), 86% of 10th/11th/12th graders took at least one AP exam, for a total of 53 AP exams. 83% of those exams received a score of 3 or higher (versus the national average of 59%). 6. Over the past two years (2008-10), our middle school interscholastic athletic program fielded teams in 9 different sports and won 12 conference titles. We fielded teams in 9 interscholastic varsity sports as well. 80% of upper school students earned at least one varsity letter in 2009-10. 7. Our small class sizes and integrated curriculum ensure that students are engaged in the process of becoming lifelong learners - not just good test-takers. 8. Our service program has always been an integral part of our curriculum, offering a new experience focused on a specific service topic at each grade level. 9. Woodlawn is accredited by both SAIS and SACS. As part of the dual accreditation process, the visiting team of educators noted that "the depth of commitment of the faculty, board members, and parents to Woodlawn is immediately evident to anyone who visits the campus." 10. Our award-winning publications include our yearbook (The Mighty Oak), student newspaper (The Lamplighter), literary magazine (The Loop), and podcast (Greencast). 11. We see our students as citizens of a diverse global society. So, our teachers have taken student groups on international trips for each of the past 5 years - to destinations such as Costa Rica, Italy, Mexico, Spain/Portugal, Argentina/Uruguay, and Greece. 12. Our parents (and even some non-parents) write glowing testimonials about the Woodlawn experience. |
