WONDER, SPIRIT + CURIOSITY
NURTURING A CHILD
Woodlawn’s Explorers Preschool embraces our “whole child” approach to learning and making sure that its students are prepared socially and academically for kindergarten.
“This program and its responsive classroom approach are natural extensions of all we do at Woodlawn,” said Holly Honeycutt, Woodlawn School Associate Head of School and School Psychologist. “Our Explorers program is focused on creating a supportive environment that nurtures adaptive, respectful, and emotionally intelligent young students who are eager and ready to learn.”
WONDER, SPIRIT + CURIOSITY
EARLY EXPLORERS (PRE-K)
The curriculum for our Explorers:
+ Rooted and designed to reflect age-appropriate developmental needs
+ Playing and learning in nature – 61 acres of woods, fields, trails, outdoor classrooms, and a working garden
+ Balances academic preparation and play
+ Develops the foundation for emotional intelligence and self-control needed for future success
+ Active, hands-on learning centered on projects that are fun and fundamental to the acquisition of learning skills
+ Based on the Responsive Classroom, a program designed to foster self-control by nurturing the concepts of mutual trust and respect
BUILDING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION
JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN (JK)
Junior Kindergarten students participate in activities and lessons that support their social-emotional development and competencies around self-regulation, cooperation, communication, assertion, empathy, and responsibility. Students work on these topics:
Fall: Thoughts and Feelings
Winter: Thinking with Your Eyes & Body in the Group
Spring: Whole Body Listening
Our JK students are supported by learning what it means to be part of a Responsive Classroom, which includes the daily routines, practices, and language of Responsive Classroom instruction with its principles at the forefront.
