Laura Wookcock
- What experience do you have running cross country? – I ran cross country in middle school and have been an endurance athlete ever since. I ran the 3000 and 1600 for my high school track team in Connecticut. Post college I really gained interest in cross country running after hiking 2,000 mi of the Appalachian trail. I’m always trail running and backpacking in my free time and am currently training to run rim to rim to rim at the Grand Canyon.
- What experience do you have coaching? – This is my first time coaching cross country, but I’m a certified yoga teacher and have taught yoga and fitness classes to adults since 2017.
- What makes cross country special to you? – Cross country running is my true training passion. I love the freedom and accessibility of running, and taking it to the trails is an added bonus. It mixes my favorite elements of the outdoors and exercise.
- What would you tell a student to get them interested in cross country? – I would tell them that trail running can help you relaxes and can give you confidence. Cross country is a sport where you are both part of a team and your own team. It’s great for athletes who want to compete and push themselves to be stronger mentally and physically.
In addition to leading the Cross Country team, Coach Woodcock teaches Middle School Science.

Thunder and Lightning at Riverbend Park in Hickory
Sept. 30, 2019 - The Trailblazers traveled to Riverbend Park to compete with 4 varsity teams - the boys race went off just fine, but the girls race was unfortunately canceled due to thunder/lightning in the area. The highlight was Jackson McGeough’s first win of the season - he outran Statesville Christian’s Adam Godwin to take the individual victory by 12 seconds. Gael Garza placed 16th in the race, followed by Ethan Mason’s 21st place finish.
Hot and Dry at McClure Park in Statesville
Sept. 23, 2019 - The highlight of this meet was Adina Jacobson’s first place finish in the varsity girls race - she has had an excellent season thus far and appears to be ready to set a few more PRs as we head down the home stretch. Carmen Lolla recorded a solid 9th place finish in that race and will be looking to break the 30 minute barrier in our October races. The boys race saw Trailblazers finishing 2nd (Jackson McGeough) and 14th (Ethan Mason). Jackson has been holding back a bit due to his early season injury, but I believe we will see him unleash his inner beast over the next few weeks.
Runners compete with 4,000 of their closest friends
Sept. 21, 2019 - The Hare and Hounds Meet at McAlpine Park always draws a huge field, and this year was no exception. It was a solid meet for the Trailblazers - Adina Jacobson was only a few seconds off her PR, running a 22:09. Jackson McGeough looked good in his first 5K of the season, running a comfortable 19:48. And sophomore Gael Garza set his first-ever PR for the 5K distance, running 21:39.
