A Woodlawn Tradition

Cross Country

DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE
Beginning in 2003, when Woodlawn middle school runners represented the school in its first-ever interscholastic competition, the Trailblazers quickly established themselves as a force in the Charlotte-area cross country community.

Then, as now, our runners trained on the soft dirt trails that surround our campus, and enjoyed winding through the forest as well as tackling the hills to build their endurance.  In 2008, the Trailblazers fielded boys and girls varsity cross country teams for the first time.  Woodlawn joined the NCISAA in 2014, and since then our boys team has been crowned SPAA conference champion 6 times and earned an impressive three-peat as 1A state champions in 2014, 2015, and 2016.  Our girls claimed both the conference championship and the 1A state championship in 2015.

Both varsity and middle school teams for boys and girls compete in the fall season.

BIO COMING SOON

Laura Woodcock, 5th Grade + Middle School Science

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Laura Wookcock

  1. What experience do you have running cross country? – I ran cross country in middle school and have been an endurance athlete ever since. I ran the 3000 and 1600 for my high school track team in Connecticut. Post college I really gained interest in cross country running after hiking 2,000 mi of the Appalachian trail. I’m always trail running and backpacking in my free time and am currently training to run rim to rim to rim at the Grand Canyon.
  2. What experience do you have coaching? – This is my first time coaching cross country, but I’m a certified yoga teacher and have taught yoga and fitness classes to adults since 2017.
  3. What makes cross country special to you? – Cross country running is my true training passion. I love the freedom and accessibility of running, and taking it to the trails is an added bonus. It mixes my favorite elements of the outdoors and exercise.
  4. What would you tell a student to get them interested in cross country? – I would tell them that trail running can help you relaxes and can give you confidence. Cross country is a sport where you are both part of a team and your own team. It’s great for athletes who want to compete and push themselves to be stronger mentally and physically.

In addition to leading the Cross Country team, Coach Woodcock teaches Middle School Science.

Varsity XC Welcome

August 9, 2015

Welcome Varsity Harriers

Welcome to Woodlawn’s 9th season of varsity cross country! I’m looking forward to another exciting season full of PRs (personal records). On the boy’s side, we are fortunate to have several standout runners returning from last year’s NCISAA 1A State Championship team. We are looking to add some more depth to the team and make another run for the 1A title in October! On the girl’s side, we are looking to combine some experience with some new blood and see if we can make some noise in the SPAA conference and at the state level as well. See you on the Red Barn patio on August 17 at 3:30pm to kick off practices!

MS XC Opener

August 9, 2015

Welcome Middle School Harriers!

Our first practice is just around the corner and I can't wait to get started! Hopefully most of you have been running a little and will be ready to jump into some fun workouts August 17. Remember, practices are everyday after school from 3:30-4:30pm. The only exception will be August 24 when practice is moved to 10:00am. We'll be running on campus using the trail system and open fields. Make sure you bring running clothes, running shoes, and a water bottle to practice each day.

Our first meet has been rescheduled, so please disregard any previous information about the August 28 meet. The new schedule accurately reflects that our first meet is September 14. That'll give us plenty of time to form our sea of green strategy!

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the trails!

Coach Karen

VXC State Championships

Boys Team Wins First-Ever Woodlawn State Championship

NCISAA State Championship Meet, Jackson Park, Hendersonville—This year's state championship meet promised to be a barn-burner, as our Trailblazers entered the meet as slight favorites over perennial 1A contender Shannon Forest Christian (which has won 3 state titles over the past decade).  At the one-mile mark, it was a 5-man race, with Woodlawn sophomores Quinn Schneider and Zachery Lorch battling two Shannon Forest runners and Trinity Academy's top runner.  Even though the Trinity Academy runner would surge over the last mile to take the individual win, Quinn hung tough for a crucial 2nd place finish ahead of both Shannon Forest runners.  Zach ran a fantastic race, clocking a personal record time of 18:04 and very nearly upsetting the second Shannon Forest runner.

Zach's 5th place and another Trinity Academy runner's 6th place meant that the team competition was effectively deadlocked 7 to 7 to 7 at that point in the race (Woodlawn's 2nd and 5th place finishes versus Shannon Forest's 3rd and 4th place finishes versus Trinity Academy's 1st and 6th place finishes).  The third runner for each team would decide the state title.  Shannon Forest's third runner, senior Luke Diemer, came out of nowhere to run the best race of his high school career - by 50 seconds - putting Woodlawn's title hopes in grave jeopardy.  Fortunately, Woodlawn senior Reilly Milburn raced to the rescue with a season-best time of 19:35 to snag 10th place, edging out Diemer and ensuring the victory for Woodlawn - by a single point!  It doesn't get much more dramatic than that!

Freshman Tripp Berini followed closely behind Reilly in 14th place, while sophomores John Bubak (with a personal record 20:43) and Austen Castellano placed in the top 30.
