Spring 2023 Highlights
The NCISAA DIII Track & Field State Championships on May 19-20, 2023 was a huge success! Every Woodlawn athlete scored points and set new personal records.
New Woodlawn Record: Running the 4 x 800M Relay, Asher H. ’27, Will M. ’25, Fenris C. ’26, and Russell J. ’26 set new PRs for each leg of the race, finishing 3rd and setting a new Woodlawn School record of 8:57.63, breaking the old school record by 12 seconds!
1600M: Asher H. ’27 – Asher set a new PR to finish under 5 minutes for the time in 4:58:38 in 9th place. His performance ranks him 9th among all 8th graders in North Carolina!
400M: Jessie W. ’28 (7th) 1:04:18 – Jessie’s performance ranks her 6th among all 7th graders in North Carolina! She is now 2nd in the Woodlawn track and field records for the event.
800M: Adina J. ’23 (11) 2:32.18 – Adina solidified her 2nd place standing in the Woodlawn track and field records for 800M; an excellent finish to 6 years of awards and great success in the Woodlawn program!

The Varsity Boys Track & Field team is coached by Nick Wilson.
“I have been coaching Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track and Field for ten years. I started coaching after I graduated high school. I graduated college from UNCC with degrees in biology and philosophy.” – Coach Wilson

Valerie Wrenholt
“I love track and field since there is truly an event for everyone.”
The Varsity Girls Track & Field team is coached by Valerie Wrenholt. Coach Wrenholt is a lifelong runner who has competed in cross country running, Nordic skiing, and track since middle school.
In high school, in Colorado, she won numerous individual and team state titles. She was also a competitive Nordic skier and was a 4-year All-American. She ran cross country for one season at Dartmouth College and competed for four years in Nordic skiing at Dartmouth, including captaining the team during her senior year.
She previously coached varsity girls cross country at Providence Day School in Charlotte.

Highlights
- We only entered 4 girls in the meet - but all of those girls scored points! Together they totaled 42 points, good for 6th place out of 12 teams (ahead of much larger teams like Gaston Day and Gaston Christian)!
- We entered 5 boys in the meet - they scored 13 points for 10th place out of 14 teams.
- Megan Dailey accounted for 30 points by herself as she won the 100m, long jump, and triple jump.
- Carmen Lolla snagged two PRs with a state-qualifying 6th place toss in the discus and a 4th place throw in the shot put. She is now in the top 5 in both events on the all-time Woodlawn list.
- Ella Williams also PR'd in the shot put, good for 5th place.
- Adina Jacobson ran a strong 1600m and took 5th place.
- Wes Neal led the boys with a 3rd place finish in the 800m.
- Jackson McGeough took 4th place in the 1600m with his 2nd best time ever.
- Jesse Jacobson and Jack Hager were 6th and 7th respectively in the 100m.
- James Folds had to juggle two field events, and his PR throw in the shot put ranks him #3 on the all-time Woodlawn list.

- Alyssa Verratti set a PR in the discus as well.
- Jesse Jacobson and RJ Klein took 2nd and 3rd places in the 400m in a photo finish, with PR and state-qualifying times that are #2 and #3 on the all-time Woodlawn list.
- Jackson McGeough took 2nd in the 800m with a PR and state-qualifying time, followed by Wesley Neal in 3rd place.
- New school record in the boys 4x800m (Jackson, RJ, Wesley, Jesse) - broke the old record by over 16 seconds!
- Aiden Lemons set PRs in both the 1600m (2nd place) and 800m.
- Syedgull Noor Ali continues to improve in the discus, setting a PR and breaking the 75-foot mark with a 6th place throw.
- Mark Cummings set PRs in the 800m and long jump.
- Gael Garza set a nice PR in the 3200m.
- James Folds returned to competition with a PR in the shot put and 4th place in the long jump.
- Ethan Essex scored in both the shot put and discus.

Highlights
- Megan Dailey won the 200m with a school record and state qualifying time. She also won the 100m. She is now ranked #1 in the NCISAA 1A/2A in four events (100m, 200m, long jump, triple jump).
- Adina Jacobson set a PR in the 800m, taking third place in the event.
- Natalie Boyle won the pole vault with a PR.
- Jackson McGeough won the 1600m, breaking the 5-minute barrier for the first time, and was runner-up in the 800m. He is now ranked among the top 5 athletes in NCISAA 1A/2A in three events (800m, 1600m, 3200m).
- Wes Neal shattered his PR in the 800m, and is also ranked in the top 5 in the state in that event.
- Aiden Lemons cracked the 12-minute barrier in the 3200m for the first time and is ranked in the top 10 in the state.
- Ethan Essex set a PR in the discus (2nd place) and won the shot put.
- Syedgull Noor Ali set a PR in the discus (4th place).
- Mark Cummings set PRs in the long jump (3rd place) and the 800m.
- Our 4x200m relay team (Jack Hager, Ethan Mason, RJ Klein, Jesse Jacobson) won the event with a time that is less than a half second off the school record.
- Gael Garza set a PR in the 800m.
- RJ won the 400m for the second week in a row.
- Jesse and Jack finished in the top 10 in both the 100m and 200m.
- Carmen Lolla set PRs in her debut in the shot and discus.
