Athletic Director

The Opportunity

Woodlawn School seeks a highly motivated Athletic Director/Teacher to join a growing school community who knows the value of a vibrant sports program in young lives. This is a 12-month position, beginning July 1, 2023. The Athletic Director/Teacher will be an inspiring, compassionate leader, who is a detailed-oriented proactive communication manager that promotes an exciting vision for Woodlawn athletics.

Woodlawn currently fields teams in ten interscholastic sports, along with several club, and budding sport clinic programs. We are a member of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association and compete at the 1A level. For a young school, small in numbers (5th -8th Grade of 64 students; 9th-12th of 51 students), its teams and individual athletes have accomplished remarkable things.

The Director of Athletics, as a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the Head of School, is responsible for organizing and overseeing athletics program budgets, personnel, and facilities. Woodlawn School is financially secure and enjoying remarkable growth. The next AD will be expected to support and sustain this momentum by establishing ambitious new program goals, creating a cohesive athletic department philosophy, hiring and developing outstanding coaches, communicating effectively with all stakeholders, and expanding sports offerings and facilities.

The Athletic Director position will also entail teaching duties, which will be determined based upon candidate expertise and student needs. Preference will be given to candidates that enjoy designing curriculum and collaborating with colleagues in the disciplines of math, science, foreign language, and/or life sports.

The AD will work closely with teachers to develop instruction and activities strategically aligned to foster lifelong health and wellness, the prosocial values of teamwork, persistence, resilience, good sportsmanship, and prepare student-athletes for competitive opportunities in 5th through 12th grades. As leader, ambassador, and spokesman for all interscholastic sports, the Athletic Director develops coaching standards, supervises and supports coaches in meeting those standards, supports hiring of faculty who can coach, develops training and conditioning programs for student-athletes, oversees facilities and field maintenance, and manages the department budget.

Woodlawn’s interscholastic athletic program features Middle and Upper School teams in Soccer (Boys and Girls); Cross Country and Track (Coed); Volleyball (Girls); Basketball (Boys and Girls); Swimming (Coed); Golf (Coed), Tennis (Boys and Girls), Flag Football (Coed), Volleyball Club (Boys), and a Baseball (MS Boys Co-op) team.

Most importantly, the AD models the highest level of sportsmanship and school spirit to rally support in the school and local community. The school seeks candidates with vision, ambition, integrity, and strong work ethic, who are program builders; and want to grow as leaders, while contributing to an exciting transformation at Woodlawn School.

Candidates may hold post-secondary and/or graduate degrees in various fields of education, leadership, sports management, physical education, and/or similar fields. They must have substantial records of success as coaches and at least three years of experience in athletic administration and leadership, ideally at independent schools.
