Varsity Track & Field at SPAA Championship Meet (at Victory Christian)

Perennial track powerhouse Victory Christian hosted the SPAA Championship meet on a hot, windy day and, as expected, came away with both the boys and girls titles.
The Woodlawn girls team, despite having only 9 athletes, claimed the SPAA runner-up trophy for the second year in a row, outscoring 3rd place University Christian by 61 points. The Lady Trailblazers were led by outstanding performances from Morgan Klein (third place in shot put, discus, and triple jump), Anne Cunningham (first place in 1600m and 3200m), Amelia Woodall (tied for 1st in high jump, 2nd in 300m hurdles), and Natalie Boyle (tied for 1st in high jump, 3rd in 300m hurdles). The girls set new school records in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays, in addition to new individual school records by Madison Berini (long jump) and Klein (triple jump). Due to Taylor Scott’s state qualifying mark in the long jump, all 9 girls have now qualified in an individual event for the upcoming 1A/2A state meet in Raleigh.
The Woodlawn boys team appeared to have locked up a runner-up trophy as well, but Hickory Christian’s field event performances erased Woodlawn’s lead and dropped the Trailblazers to 3rd place by a narrow margin of just 4 points. The boys were led by the reliable Quinn Schneider, who accounted for 30 points by winning the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runs. Matt Childers set new school records in both the shot put and discus, while Jake Johnson broke his own school record by over a foot in the long jump.
