DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Board of Trustees of Woodlawn School is pleased to announce the selection of Adam Schapiro as our next Head of School, beginning July 1, 2016. Mr. Schapiro comes to Woodlawn from The Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, where he currently serves as Associate Head of School.
The selection is the result of an extensive national search conducted by the members of the Board-selected Search Committee and assisted by Southern Teachers Agency. The committee selected two candidates as finalists who visited Woodlawn in September and met with students, faculty members, and parents. Mr. Schapiro received the unanimous support of the Board of Trustees, who made the final selection.
“Adam Schapiro is a leader with a passion for education and for children,” said Dwayne Bowman, Chair of the Woodlawn School Board of Trustees. “During our discussions and his campus visit, the Search Committee noted his immediate connection with Woodlawn students and his high energy level and enthusiasm. We agreed that he is an excellent match for our school.”
Mr. Schapiro began his career in schools in 2004 at Alexandria Country Day in Virginia where he worked as an admission officer, teacher, and coach. He and his family then moved to Saltsburg, PA where he was appointed Associate Director of Admissions at The Kiski School. In 2008 he was promoted to be the Dean of Students, a position he held for four years. He joins Woodlawn after four years as the school's Associate Headmaster, responsible for managing the school's daily operations and working with faculty and administrators to bolster Kiski's academic and co-curricular programs. He also worked closely with the admission and development offices on devising marketing, enrollment, and fundraising strategies.
A 1996 graduate of Hobart College in Geneva, New York, Adam majored in Sociology and was a two-time All-American in tennis. In 2001 he was inducted in the school's Hall of Fame and was the first tennis player and the youngest student-athlete to achieve this honor. In 2011 Adam attended the University of Pennsylvania and earned a Masters degree in Educational Leadership. His thesis focused on the readiness of faculty to incorporate 21st century education into its curriculum and pedagogy. Adam met his wife, Erika, while attending Hobart and William Smith, and they have a son and daughter, Addison and Mya.
“My family and I are honored and excited to become part of the Woodlawn community,” said Mr. Schapiro. “There is little doubt in my mind that the future of this school is bright and I cannot wait to get to North Carolina to get started.”
Woodlawn School thanks the Selection Committee and the consultants at Southern Teachers Agency, as well as all of the members of the Woodlawn community who have contributed greatly to the search process.
Additionally, Woodlawn School remains grateful for the leadership of Dr. Bob Shirley, who has served as Interim Head of School during the 2015 and 2016 academic years. His commitment to the school’s mission and values helped establish a firm foundation for the school for many years to come.
