AP COURSES + HONORS

COME SEE THE DIFFERENCE

Exceptional Performance

Advanced Placement at Woodlawn

Woodlawn currently offers eight Advanced Placement (AP) courses in the Upper School curriculum. Students who score 3 or above on AP exams are often awarded college credit or placed in higher-level college courses. AP courses currently offered include Biology, Calculus AB, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, and US History.

73 members (56%) of the Classes of 2010-2019 were recognized as AP Scholars for their exceptional performance on AP exams while at Woodlawn.

About AP Courses...

Before I left Princeton for break, I received a letter indicating that due to my AP scores I qualify for something Princeton calls advanced standing. This means that I have completed enough prerequisites with my APs that, if I wanted to, I could take a leave of absence for a semester in either my sophomore or junior year either to travel or to complete an internship, and still graduate with my class in 2016. Woodlawn has prepared me so much for college that the education I received is equivalent to a semester at Princeton!

Exceptional Performance

Advanced Placement Scholars

Over half of all Woodlawn graduates have earned Advanced Placement (AP) Awards based on their exceptional performance on AP exams. Students who score well on AP exams may earn college credit as well as placement into higher-level college classes. Woodlawn currently offers eight Advanced Placement courses in its upper school curriculum.

The highest AP Award, National AP Scholar, is given annually to the top 1% of Advanced Placement students. In North Carolina, for example, only about 500 students qualify for National AP Scholar recognition each year.

Out of our 141 graduates (Classes of 2010-2020), 73 have earned an AP Award – click on the student photos below to view more information about their post-Woodlawn activities.

Hi Everyone! Sydney here—self-proclaimed original Trailblazer! I'm proud to say I'm one of three that has been here the longest of any Woodlawn student so far. I've spent a decade of my life on this campus, and you get to know a place pretty well after 10 years. One thing’s for sure: Woodlawn’s never boring! I’ve seen a lot of interesting things go down on our 61-acre campus through the years. But without a doubt, Woodlawn Day always registers at the top of my favorite traditions. The rumors are true—it involves square dancing. Each fall we pair up with a new partner and re-learn all of the steps to the do-si-do along with the entire school community! Looking back it’s easy to point out our stages of maturity. We loved it as grade school children, were embarrassed by it as middle school students, and now?

Now it’s an important day. We dance to honor our historic plantation campus, and as seniors, we dance for other reasons too. More than a school tradition, Woodlawn Day has become a rite of passage.  We are no longer the timid kids who wonder what they have just signed onto by going to a small school with traditions that date back to the 1800’s. Woodlawn has empowered us to dance the Virginia Reel with our calculus teacher, who always dresses the part with a straw hat and overalls. What teen would voluntarily do such a thing? And yet, we understand now that letting your guard down, having fun in silly ways, is what has enriched our lives the most at Woodlawn.

Woodlawn encouraged us to experiment, evolve, and grow into the people we were meant to be. We are artists, scholars, athletes, and so much more. My years here have changed me in ways I never thought they would.

I’m Jack Hager, and I am a senior here at Woodlawn! I came here in third grade alongside my older brother, David, and we immediately fell in love with the school. Over the past ten years, I have been able to watch Woodlawn grow into the incredibly special place that it is today. Woodlawn offers an experience unlike any other school, and I can honestly say that it has shaped me into the person I am today.

In the classroom, the small size of Woodlawn truly shines. Students are able to establish meaningful relationships with faculty, which fosters a supportive and familial environment. I never hesitate to ask a question or attempt a challenging problem, because I know that both my teacher and my classmates always have my back. Without this setting, I doubt I would be nearly as eager to learn as I have been here. Now, as a senior, I feel prepared to go off to college and speak up, a valuable skill that I owe to Woodlawn.

Outside of the classroom, the sky's the limit for what a student can do here. During my time at Woodlawn, I have had the opportunity to explore several of my interests and blaze my own trail. One great example of this came during the winter of my sophomore year, when a couple friends and I wanted to run indoor track. Due to the rules of our conference, Woodlawn is not allowed to have an indoor track team associated with the school. Despite this unfortunate rule, my friends and I were able to establish a club team which allowed us to compete. Since its establishment, our club has run each winter, and it’s just one example of how the opportunities at Woodlawn are endless. I am extremely grateful for the role that Woodlawn has played in my life, and I would encourage anybody with the opportunity to attend this school to take it.

Jack is currently a freshman at Duke University.

I’ve been swimming since I was in the first grade, so it only felt natural that I should try to convince four of my Woodlawn friends to start the first-ever Woodlawn varsity swim team. And so we did. Despite my years of competitive swimming, I’d never actually led a team. But Coach Jackie tossed me my brand new Woodlawn swim cap and said, “you’re going to be the captain.” I can still remember clearly thinking, “Man, I’m so glad to be wearing this green swim cap emblazoned with the bold white “W”.” That was then. Fast forward two years: we have 15 members swimming on our “tiny” but mighty team and just last year we ranked first of all 1A schools in swimming. It makes you wonder how we did it — how did we grow this team and how did we become the best swim team of 1A schools? Was it skill? I believe it to be something else entirely. Students who go to Woodlawn understand something I like to call “coachability”. It’s the ability to be corrected, learn from mistakes, and always be ready to try something different. And this carries into the classroom as well. The student-teacher relationship here is unmatched. It’s not atypical to hear conversations between student and teacher during our lunch hour about the African water crisis or how to create a black hole that won’t de-atomize the Earth. Woodlawn gives every student freedoms, responsibilities, and trust. And this allows us to grow and affect those around us.This year, along with two of my classmates, we’re building the Woodlawn Outdoors Education Program (WOE). With supervision from Mr. Van Amburgh, we are constructing a low ropes course program for the school along with an entire curriculum for an outdoor training experience. I could never have dreamed of doing something like this anywhere else. This is my last year at Woodlawn. I’m looking for ways to make an impact—whether it be the ropes course, a Ga-Ga pit (we built one of those my sophomore year), or contributing to our swim team’s accolades. Woodlawn has given me a drive to be the best I can be. It’s truly different from anywhere else. The people here are here to help you be the best you can be.

Zach is currently a junior at the US Air Force Academy.

Hi! My name is Clare MacDonald, and I’m a junior at Woodlawn School. Honestly, when I read those words, “I’m a junior,” it’s a little daunting. I’ve been at this school since 5th grade; my formative years of middle school have quickly passed me by in a creative, energetic blur, and already being in the heat of high school seems impossible. Though college applications are on the horizon, my stress immediately dissipates upon walking in the door of Woods Hall, because any other environment would be unimaginable.

We’re more than just your average school. We’re a vibrant, diverse community that supports each other’s various strengths and weaknesses. For example, one of my good friends is a talented visual artist, while another is a Division 1 soccer recruit. Woodlawn adapts to the individual and gives them the materials to succeed in their respective passions, and this could not be possible without our fantastic teachers. The excitement they have for their subjects is contagious in our small class sizes that emphasize challenging, hands-on learning, and complex discussions. Not to mention, they’re always available to discuss the drama of the latest Mad Men episode or rave extensively about a certain band!

If I had to pinpoint my favorite thing about Woodlawn (this is more difficult than one would think), it would be the ability to do anything I’m interested in. From playing three varsity sports to teaching a middle school music elective to co-directing an award-winning medical PSA, I’ve dabbled and experimented in a wide array of topics.

Simply stated, Woodlawn is an integral part of my identity. Well-rounded, with lifetime friendships, I know I have the tools to face whatever college has in store for me.

Clare is a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and is employed at LinkedIn in San Francisco, CA.
