APPLYING TO WOODLAWN
FINDING THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOUR FAMILY
THE POWER OF PRODUCTIVE PARTNERSHIPS
THE PROCESS
Woodlawn is a mission-driven, student-centered school. We thrive upon close, positive, productive partnerships with parents who choose us because of our mission, our culture, our vision and our values. They know the power of small class sizes and a school that feels like an extension of family. We are unlike any school in our region and, in many cases, unlike the kind of schools our parents attended when they were young.
Campus visits are essential. Every family meets with school leaders and the Admissions Director, and classroom visits are an essential part of the process. Those discussions and visits help everyone learn about the essential elements of fit.
We carefully review transcripts and teacher recommendations looking for areas of alignment between a child’s current course of study and Woodlawn’s programs.
The assessments we use are rooted in age-appropriate Language Arts and Math materials drawn from Woodlawn’s curriculum. Our teachers look for areas of strength and identify areas of need, as well as skills in critical thinking and communication.
Once the visit, interview, and assessment process are complete, we strive to make a decision within seven days, then set up a meeting with parents. If we have space within the grade and we see strong evidence of fit, we offer immediate placement; sometimes we must offer a place on our waiting list. In some cases, the offer of admission is conditional upon outside tutoring in certain subjects. There are cases where Woodlawn is not the best fit, and we work to help parents find alternatives.

“My life at Woodlawn is central to my identity, and I wouldn’t be the same had it not been for this small community where teachers and classmates become a second family. Woodlawn is unique. Where else would you find students playing basketball in a gym designed to look like a traditional red barn or see middle schoolers studying about plants in the campus gardens? As students and teachers we are athletes, artists, musicians, and much more. Sometimes a bit quirky – one friend created a business designing bow ties and a favorite teacher, a former Apple executive, enjoys flying his drone around campus.”
