collaboration + critical thinking
woodlawn arts program
Our curriculum in the Lower and Middle Schools is, in many ways, arts-driven; dance, music, theater, and visual arts are integrated across disciplines and often anchor our project work. In the Upper School, students have opportunities to pursue the visual and performing arts through application projects in their core classes and through various elective offerings, student clubs, and school programs. It is during this time that many discover their creative talents in the art room.
ARTISTIC EXPRESSION
ARTS ABOUND
Where inquiry, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, self-evaluation and reflection intersect.
These skills are the cornerstones of our arts programs at Woodlawn. From its inception, Woodlawn has recognized the arts not as an “extra,” but rather as a fundamental component to our students’ experience. This is because we understand and value what the arts intrinsically provide to our students: The opportunity to be challenged in entirely new ways, to think critically, to integrate and apply what they have learned in math, English, science, or history, to learn theoretically and practically, to gain self-awareness, and to better connect to the human experience.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
PERFORMING ARTS
At Woodlawn, all students are actors, musicians, speakers, and dancers. We celebrate the performing arts, appreciating how they challenge and affirm students, and find ways to integrate various forms of performance into academic core classes.
A BLANK CANVAS
VISUAL ARTS
When a seventh grader is given the task of designing a tiny home for a client, or a tenth grader is charged with bringing Shakespeare to life; when a fifth grader curates a cultural museum exhibition, or an eleventh grader performs modern dance in front of his peers, lifelong learning happens.
NOW PLAYING
MUSIC
Musical theater and music class are both offered as enrichment courses in lower school. All students in lower school participate in an annual musical theater production every spring. In middle school and upper school, students have multiple elective offerings in music, theatre, and dance as well as opportunities throughout the year to share their talents. Students are involved in all aspects of production: direction, design, acting, technical direction, and stage management.
DIGITAL + PRINT MEDIA
STUDENT PUBLICATIONS
Woodlawn students in the Upper School oversee the design and publication of our annual yearbook. The student staff plans the theme, design, page layouts and works as a team to collect images, write copy and more to create and publish a yearbook that is both full of memories, and joyful work.
ON YOUR MARK...
ATHLETICS
Woodlawn encourages Scholar Athletes with dozens of “no-cut” athletics teams including cross country, track, soccer, volleyball, golf, tennis, basketball, and more. Our campus features the best track and gym facilities in the region.
WOODLAWN ALUMNI
Learning how to be resilient is one of the key factors Woodlawn taught Neal during his eight years as a Trailblazer. He says that and the small class sizes and relationships with his teachers are the three big things that helped him navigate medical school and the process of getting into medical school successfully. While at Woodlawn, Neal was a member of the first varsity golf team. Interestingly enough, his senior capstone project centered around medicine.

OUTDOOR LEARNING
Woodlawn School prides itself on providing outdoor learning spaces for our students. Our patio areas, rope course, and organic garden are just a few of the ways we bring lessons to the outdoors.
