Leaving a Legacy with Low Ropes
The backstory to Woodlawn’s newest campus addition
During an art class two years ago, current senior students Quinn S., Zach L., and Jake J. came up with an idea to create a space in the woods that all students could enjoy. What started as a tree house sketch turned into what is now a full-on program that includes an Outdoor Student Leadership Elective class, a team building program for K-12, and a bona fide low ropes course recently installed this past December!
Known affectionately as the “Ropes Boys” and led by Mr. Van Amburgh - Quinn, Zach, and Jake - have dedicated their time each week developing a sustainable program in hopes of creating a lasting impact for generations of students to come. The ropes course installation includes 10 elements and about a dozen field initiatives where participating groups have the opportunity to work together in a fun and meaningful way. Each element propels students into a challenge where communication becomes the key!
The Ropes Boys have been training new leaders to replace themselves for when they depart after graduation. Upper School students who opt into the Outdoor Student Leadership Elective are trained to facilitate the course and lead team building initiatives for all other student or adult groups who come for the experience.
In true Woodlawn fashion, this leadership program is preparing to launch a school-wide initiative that will span disciplines and all grade levels — Woodlawn Outdoor Adventure — details coming soon!
