Seven Athletes Qualify for the NCISAA 1A/2A State Championship Meet
DAVIDSON, N.C. – During the May 12 SPAA Conference Championship Meet, the Woodlawn boys battled down to the last event for the runner-up spot, posting a team score of 116 points but falling just short of Hickory Christian’s 120-point effort. Perennial track powerhouse Victory Christian took the title with an impressive 192 points, and University Christian scored 59 points to place fourth.
The Trailblazers' performance was highlighted by a triple victory from junior Quinn Schneider, who accounted for 30 points by winning the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runs. As the current favorite to win the 1600m run in the state championship meet next week, Schneider is bidding to become Woodlawn’s first-ever track event state champion.
Junior Matt Childers shattered his own school records in both the shot put and discus throws, while junior Jake Johnson broke his school record in the long jump by more than a foot. Senior Drew Hedrick scored points in both the 100m and 200m dashes, and anchored Woodlawn’s 4x100m relay team to a second-place finish and a new school record.
In order to qualify for an individual event at the state championship meet, athletes must participate in at least four meets during the season and must post a performance equal to or better than the qualifying standard for that event. This season, seven of Woodlawn’s boys have qualified at the state level for the following events:
• Tripp Berini - 400m, 800m
• Matt Childers – Discus
• Drew Hedrick - 100m, 200m, 400m
• Jake Johnson - 400m, Long Jump, Triple Jump
• Ben Leach - Discus
• Zach Lorch - 300m Hurdles
• Quinn Schneider - 800m, 1600m, 3200m
The 2016 NCISAA 1A/2A State Championship will be held May 20-21 at North Raleigh Christian Academy.
