Every ‘Blazer’s story starts somewhere. In Kindergarten through 5th Grade, students develop the curiosity, skills, and confidence that grow with them through every division, through projects connected to real questions, real places, and real people.

Woodlawn’s six graduate outcomes don’t arrive fully formed at graduation. They grow over fourteen years, one project at a time. Lower School is where that growth begins, where students first learn to ask a hard question, work alongside someone different from them, and share what they have discovered with an audience that is paying attention.
Every experience in Kindergarten through 5th Grade is designed to build toward something larger. The curiosity a student develops here follows them into Middle School, Upper School, and every year beyond.
Every Lower School project moves through the same four-stage framework. Students learn that good work is not linear, and that the question matters as much as the answer.
An integrated
curriculum, built

Lower School ‘Blazers study language arts, mathematics, social studies, science & gardening, Spanish, visual arts, music & performing arts, and life skills. Every subject is connected by a driving question, so students see how what they learn in one area opens up something new in another.

Lower School at Woodlawn is full of moments that a student remembers decades later. These are not extras. They are the education, designed into the program because we believe what a child does is inseparable from who they become.
Feathered Friends
Kindergartners incubate chicken eggs, track temperatures over a 21-day cycle, and care for chicks as they hatch and grow. It is science, responsibility, and wonder in one experience. Ask any Woodlawn graduate: they remember the chicks.
Organic Garden
Woodlawn’s organic vegetable and flower garden is a working outdoor classroom. ‘Blazers plant, weed, harvest, and compost across both fall and spring semesters, taking home what they grow. Science, sustainability, and belonging to a living system, all in one acre.
Service Learning
Lower School ‘Blazers regularly visit community partners including Bridge of Hearts, Davidson Police Department, Mooresville Library, Fifth Street Ministries, La Escuelita Bilingual Pre-school and Equuvation. Service is woven into the academic calendar, not added to the end of it.
Red Barn Playhouse
Each spring, Lower School students may take the stage in Woodlawn’s Red Barn Playhouse for a full production performed for the entire school community. From audition through curtain call, students build discipline, creative courage, and the confidence that comes from being truly seen.
Kindergarten Graduation March
Before the formal ceremony, Kindergarten graduates take a lap around the quad while the entire student body cheers. It is one of the most joyful moments of the school year, and a signal of what Woodlawn means by community.
A Night of the Arts
A Night of the Arts is a celebration of student voice in every form. Students share their chosen art with family and friends, from music and movement to visual work and performance. The evening belongs entirely to the students who created it.
Learning extends beyond the campus.
Field experiences are not field trips. They are the research phase of the project, the moment where students bring a real question to a real place and return with real knowledge. Woodlawn’s 61-acre campus in Mooresville, NC opens onto a community full of partners, experts, and places worth learning from.
Students leave campus regularly throughout the year, connecting academic work to the Lake Norman region and beyond. Every experience has a driving question behind it and a presentation ahead of it.
Go Green is more than
a spirit day.
At Woodlawn, sustainability is a daily practice, not a theme. Our green and white school colors are a reminder that living lightly on the Earth is part of who ‘Blazers are — alongside the composting, the organic garden, and the choices students make every day on a 61-acre campus.
Organic Gardening
Students grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers across fall and spring semesters — learning agriculture, ecology, and where food comes from through hands-on work in the soil.
Composting + Recycling
Lower School ‘Blazers manage composting and recycling as part of the campus community. Environmental responsibility is practiced every day, not taught abstractly.
Campus as Classroom
Walking trails, garden beds, and natural spaces across our 61-acre campus give students the experience of learning in and from the natural world all year.
