Planned Giving · Legacy Society · Woodlawn School · Mooresville, NC

Your legacy.
Their future.
Woven together.

A planned gift to Woodlawn School is one of the most meaningful ways to invest in the education of future generations of students in the Lake Norman community. Every planned gift, at every level, strengthens the school’s long-term financial independence and extends the impact of what Woodlawn does to students and families far into the future.

What Is Planned Giving

A gift that outlasts
any single school year.

Planned giving refers to charitable contributions arranged now but typically fulfilled in the future, often as part of an estate plan. These gifts allow donors to make a meaningful impact on Woodlawn’s long-term mission without necessarily affecting their financial situation today.

Because Woodlawn is still a young school, planned gifts carry particular weight. The school’s endowment is in its early stages, and every planned gift strengthens the financial foundation that allows Woodlawn to remain accessible, innovative, and independent for generations of students in Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, and the Lake Norman region.

Why Plan a Gift

Planning a legacy gift doesn’t
mean waiting to give.

Most planned gifts require no immediate financial outlay. They can often be arranged with a simple update to an existing will, trust, or beneficiary designation. Your estate planner or financial advisor can help you structure a gift that honors both your family’s financial goals and your commitment to Woodlawn’s future.

Meaningful Impact

Planned gifts often represent the largest contributions Woodlawn receives. They fund endowment, scholarship access, facilities, and the long-term programs that outlast any individual school year.

Significant Tax Benefits

Many planned giving vehicles provide substantial tax advantages for donors and their estates. A qualified financial or estate planning advisor can help identify the approach that works best for your situation.

Recognition + Community

Planned gift donors are welcomed into the Woodlawn Legacy Society, recognized with gratitude across appropriate school communications, and celebrated as permanent members of the Woodlawn community.

Ways to Give

Six options.
One lasting commitment.

Woodlawn welcomes planned gifts in many forms. The right approach depends on your financial situation, family circumstances, and goals. A qualified estate planning attorney or financial advisor can help you determine which vehicle is the best fit. The Advancement team is always available to talk through options.

Bequest in a Will or Trust

The most common form of planned giving. Name Woodlawn School as a beneficiary of your will or living trust to receive a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residual after other bequests are fulfilled.

Suggested language: “I give [dollar amount / percentage / residue] to Woodlawn School, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located at 135 Woodlawn School Loop, Mooresville, NC 28115, EIN 42-1544637, to be used for its general charitable purposes.”

Beneficiary Designation

Name Woodlawn School as a beneficiary on a retirement account (IRA, 401k, 403b), life insurance policy, bank account, or investment account. Assets pass directly to Woodlawn outside of probate. Can be updated at any time without changing your will.

IRA Charitable Rollover

Donors age 70½ or older can transfer up to $105,000 per year directly from an IRA to Woodlawn School tax-free. This Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution and is excluded from your taxable income. A highly efficient giving vehicle for eligible donors.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities

Transfer appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds directly to Woodlawn to avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation while deducting the full fair market value. Works for both current and planned gifts.

Charitable Remainder Trust

Transfer assets to a trust that pays income to you or your beneficiaries for a period of time. When the trust terminates, the remaining assets pass to Woodlawn. Provides income, a partial charitable deduction, and an eventual gift to the school. Typically requires legal counsel to establish.

Endowment Gifts

An endowment gift to Woodlawn is invested in perpetuity, with a portion of the annual return supporting the school’s programs or a named purpose of your choosing. Because Woodlawn’s endowment is in its early stages, every endowment gift is foundational. Contact the Advancement team to discuss naming and designation options.

While You Plan · Give Today

Planning a legacy gift
doesn’t mean waiting.

Many donors who make planned gift commitments also support the ‘Blazer Fund annually. Annual giving has an immediate impact on the students at Woodlawn right now, while a planned gift ensures the school’s strength for the students who will follow them. Both gifts matter. Both are tax-deductible. Together, they represent the fullest expression of what it means to be part of the Woodlawn community.
