Student Publications

COME SEE THE DIFFERENCE

Student Driven

STUDENT Publications

Publications at Woodlawn are student-driven and support and guidance from faculty advisors. We publish a yearbook annually, and a student newspaper each trimester.

Student Newspaper

Blazer Bureau

The Blazer Bureau is a 100% student-created, printed news publication for Woodlawn School. We cover academics, social events, sports, food, entertainment, and whatever else our staff members feel passionate about. Students decide what they want to cover, conduct their reporting, write their articles, produce artwork, take photos, and create the design and layout. We produce three issues per year which are distributed to all students, faculty, and any interested parents. We plan to begin offering advertising with our 2021-22 issues, and students will learn how to create marketing pieces, target and talk with potential advertisers, and design advertisements. We also plan to enter local, statewide, and national contests to test ourselves against other school publications. The Blazer Bureau staff hopes to make our publication a permanent part of the culture and tradition of Woodlawn School.

Yearbook

Mighty Oak

The Mighty Oak is the annual school yearbook. At 104 pages, the yearbook features thousands of photos of all students, K-12, and is distributed at the commencement ceremony in June every year. Students participate as editors, staff, photographers, writers, and designers. Students can take the yearbook elective in winter and spring trimesters. Editors, however, begin as apprentice editors in one year and gradually take over management of the design in the following year. Editors oversee theme and design. Students use Jostens online software to manage photos, set type, and design the pages. In 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2017, The Mighty Oak was recognized for its creative design by Jostens Look Book Design Competition.

Paying it forward

“Being able to help other staff members get better and learn new skills is my favorite part of being the yearbook editor. We try really hard to equip the staff with everything they will need to have a successful book after we are gone! I can’t wait to come back in the future and see the awesome books they will make!”

Morgan Klein, '19 UNC Chapel Hill

Showcasing memories

“There is a lot of thought that goes into the production of the yearbook. As editors, we have a say in every photo, color, and font that’s chosen. My favorite part of yearbook is being able to showcase everyone’s favorite memories from the year.”
