COME SEE THE DIFFERENCE

Supporting Excellence

Facilities

Woodlawn takes pride in providing excellent facilities to support our scholar athletes. From almost two miles of beautiful wooded running trails, a state-of-the-art track, regulation soccer field, and a large gym with a NBA style hardwood maple floor, Woodlawn athletes have the facilities to train and compete safely at the highest levels. These facilities have been made possible through the generosity of our families and alumni.

state-of-the-art

Alumni Track

The Alumni Track includes a certified 400-meter, 8-lane track, complete with facilities for all the standard field events (shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault).  Woodlawn runners, throwers, and jumpers have access to a state-of-the-art facility for practice and competition. The synthetic multi-layered polyurethane surface increases speed and provides superb shock absorption to minimize fatigue and injury.

The Alumni Track and Field was built in 2015-16 and funded from Woodlawn’s third capital campaign, which raised over $1 million. 90% of that total was given by alumni families.

More Than A Gym

The Barn

The Barn is our gymnasium with regulation basketball and volleyball courts, as well as bleacher seating and a custom-built, retractable stage for theatrical performances

Construction on The Barn and Woods Hall started in May of 2007, and was completed in August of 2008 as part of Woodlawn Schools first capital campaign.

In the summer of 2022, the floor of the The Barn was upgraded with funds provided a generous anonymous donor. Just like NBA and premier NCAA arenas and the The Barn now features a high-tech suspended hardwood maple floor. Basketball and volleyball players start faster, jump higher and land with minimal impact resulting in better performance, reduced fatigue and fewer injuries.

The Barn hosts games, theater and music performances,  talent shows, fairs and assemblies of all sorts. As the indoor community center, it’s more then just a gym.

REGULATION SIZED FIELD

SoCCER Fields

Located inside the oval of the Alumni Track is our NCAA-sized, natural turf soccer field with irrigation. This allows our teams, and outside groups to practice and compete on a regulation sized field.

Lower and middle school enjoy playing soccer and other sports on the Quad in the middle of campus.

TWO MILES IN NATURAL SURROUNDINGS

Running Trails

Almost two miles of running trails wind through the woods surrounding the Woodlawn campus.

+ West Trail – Runs through the Low Ropes challenge course and outdoor classroom on the west side of campus.

+East Trail – Inherited and improved.

+ Brown Demon Trail – Includes the toughest hill where the trail passes by a large gulley named the “Abyss of Death”.

+ Van Buren Trail – Created by Dwayne Bowman

+ Oathkeeper Trail – Built by Sawyer Bowman ’11 and Terin Patel-Wilson ‘11 as a summer project on the northern end of campus.

+ Mid Trail – Created by Dwayne Bowman

+ Fork Trail – Built by Zach Lorch ’17 as a senior project.

Runners also use gravel roads on the east on west sides of campus (Swan Lake Rd. and Stonehaven Rd.)

Outdoor Student LEADERSHIP

Low RoPes Course

The low ropes course is a set of 10 elements that were installed in the wooded area west of the track in December of 2016.  The project was spearheaded by former science teacher Chris Van Amburgh and several students from the class of 2017.  They designed the layout, raised funds to partially cover the project, and hired an external company to professionally install the elements.  The elements are intended to help participants with skills such as balance and teamwork. The elements include Whale Watch, The Wall, Spider Web, TP Shuffle, Wild Woozy, and Energy Stumps,

In the summer of 2020, inspired by the changing needs of our classrooms during the COVID pandemic, Drew Hedrick ’16 volunteered his time to install an outdoor classroom in the middle of the low ropes course area.  This outdoor classroom has been used almost constantly since installation.

FACILITIES RENTAL

Woodlawn’s athletic facilities, are frequently rented by clubs and other schools because of the high quality of our gymnasium and athletic fields. If you are interested in renting the track, soccer field or gym for your team, please email Paul Zanowski at [email protected].
