A Community That Reflects the World
‘Blazers come to Woodlawn from a wide range of racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and family backgrounds. They arrive from large schools and small schools, public and private. They bring diverse interests, talents, and ways of approaching a question. The diversity of who is in the room is part of what makes the learning real. Building the Awareness outcome requires genuine contact with perspectives different from your own, and that is what Woodlawn’s community provides.

Learning That Connects to the Real World
Woodlawn’s curriculum includes service learning partnerships, global studies, and project-based inquiry that consistently bring students into contact with communities and perspectives beyond their own immediate experience. ‘Blazers examine the interconnectedness of the global population, engage with social justice questions, and develop the capacity to act responsibly and with genuine understanding in a pluralistic world. Understanding is built, not assumed.
Heritage Festival.
Every year, the Woodlawn community gathers in the Red Barn for Heritage Festival, one of the most distinctive events on the school calendar. Students, families, and faculty share food, music, traditional dress, and stories from their own cultural backgrounds, creating an experience that is impossible to replicate in a classroom.
“Walking in the Barn during the Heritage Festival is really like entering a whole new world on campus. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the students all dressed in traditional garments representing their heritage: it’s remarkable what these parents, teachers, and students offer our community in terms of cultural diversity. It’s the ultimate sharing experience.”
Heritage Festival is not a performance for an audience. It is a community sharing itself with itself, and that distinction matters. It is one of the most honest expressions of who Woodlawn is and what the Awareness outcome looks like when it is fully alive.
Building belonging
across every grade level.
Service learning is woven into the academic calendar from Kindergarten through 12th Grade. ‘Blazers work alongside community partners including Bridge of Hearts, Ronald McDonald House, Mooresville Library, Fifth Street Ministries, and others across the Lake Norman region. The partnerships are sustained, not one-time. Students return to the same communities year after year, building real relationships and a genuine understanding of what it means to contribute.
