Woodlawn Boys Win SPAA Championship; Girls Take Runner-Up Spot

Oct. 19, 2017 – The Trailblazers returned to Fisher Farm Park in Davidson on a pleasant fall afternoon to close out their 2017 SPAA conference campaigns. The Woodlawn boys went into the race as a strong favorite to win, and their performances did not disappoint. Senior Tripp Berini continued his comeback from a summer injury, improving his time for the 4th straight race. He quickly moved to the front of the pack and was never challenged, winning the race and recording a personal best time of 18:17 (#6 all-time on the Woodlawn boys 5K list). Freshman Jackson McGeough was second across the line as he set his third PR in as many weeks with a time of 18:46, moving him to #8 on the all-time Woodlawn list. The boys’ scoring was completed by sophomore Ethan Mason, running a season best 20:28 for 8th place in the race.

The Woodlawn girls entered the race as a slight underdog to University Christian and ended up just 3 points short of the title. 7th grader Adina Jacobson put on a ferocious kick in the final mile to nab 3rd place with a huge personal record time of 22:59 (#6 on the all-time Woodlawn girls 5K list). She was followed by senior Zoe Milburn (personal record of 24:42 for 8th place) and junior Ally Fleming (season best 24:46 for 9th place) to wrap up the scoring for the girls.
