September 1: Woodlawn vs University Christian

Last night the Varsity volleyball team traveled to Hickory to take on University Christian, newcomers to the SPAA Conference. From the start, the team was at a disadvantage without junior, outside hitter, Rachel N., but the team came out swinging. After dropping the first match 17-25, the team rallied to win the next two sets: 25-22, 25-19. However, the momentum was lost in set four, when University Christian went on a 10 point run with a strong server. The team dropped the fourth set 8-25, forcing us into a 5th set playoff to 15 points. Both teams were playing aggressive and we were point for point, until it was 8-8. Again, a strong server went back to the line and the Blazers dropped three points 8-11. After a time-out, the team was able to rally back, but University earned the victory 11-15. Again, the team showed progress with 19 kills, 14 aces and 42 digs. The team was led by junior, Amelia W., with 10 kills and 3 blocks. Defensively, Natalie B., senior, contributed 12 digs and 19 assists. Freshmen, Abigail W., earned four aces last night. We will be turning our focus to serve receive and defense and in practice and look forward to traveling to Statesville on Thursday.
