Our 2007 Capital Campaign
In January, 2007, Woodlawn announced its first-ever capital campaign with the goal of funding two new buildings, an upper school classroom building and a gymnasium. We broke ground on the project in May of 2007, and the buildings were completed in August, 2008.
During the course of this capital campaign, we completed a series of improvements, all of which were designed to be compatible with the existing facilities on Woodlawn's campus, including the 170-year-old Stinson Hall. Donors were asked to make pledges toward the campaign to be fulfilled over the following 3 years. This project included:
- an upper school classroom building consisting of 4 general-purpose classrooms and a science lab designed for Advanced Placement-level science courses
- a gymnasium with regulation basketball and volleyball courts, as well as bleacher seating and a custom-built, retractable stage for theatrical performances
- a clock tower adjacent to the buildings containing a 6,000-gallon water tank to be used in the event of a fire
- a concrete patio connecting the two buildings
- a new, one-way asphalt road coming off the existing drive and exiting the campus onto Midway Lake Road
- additional asphalt and gravel parking areas
In September, 2008, the upper school classroom building was dedicated as Woods Hall, in memory of James Woods, a Davidson resident who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. His brother, John Woods, the current mayor of Davidson, along with several other family members, attended the ceremony.
"Think Outside the Quad" — 2010 Capital Campaign
In March, 2010, Woodlawn announced its second capital campaign with the goal of funding two new buildings, Van Buren Hall and the Lodge. We broke ground on the project in May, and the buildings were completed in October, 2010.
During the course of this capital campaign, we completed a series of improvements, all of which were designed to be compatible with the existing facilities on Woodlawn's campus, including the 175-year-old Stinson Hall. Donors were asked to make pledges toward the campaign to be fulfilled over the following 3 years. This project included:
- a multi-purpose building designed to host small performances, portfolio viewings, music/drama rehearsals, student lunches, and cooking classes
- a classroom building housing two general-purpose classrooms and two visual arts classrooms
- a natural stone patio with outdoor fireplace connecting the two buildings
- renovation of the Carriage House to accommodate a Kindergarten class
- renovations to our existing soccer field, adding irrigation, turf, and stone seating
- a natural stone amphitheater overlooking one end of the soccer field
- additional parking
