Spikes, kills, attacks, blocks … no it’s not a video game … it’s volleyball. Every time one of our volleyball teams takes the court, the crowd goes wild! Volleyball is a fast paced sport that is as much fun for the spectators as for the players. Volleyball requires practice, coordination and above all teamwork.
The Girls Varsity team started in 2009 in the Mid-State Conference and moved to the NCISAA in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association conference in 2014.
Since boys volleyball is not yet recognized by the NCISAA, the Boys Varsity team, which debuted in the spring of 2022, plays “club” against teams from the greater Charlotte area ranging from small 1A private schools to 4A public schools.
The Girls Varsity and Girls Middle School teams play in the fall and the Boys Varsity team plays in the spring.

2018 Season Recap
After a season of ups and downs, everyone who’s a part of our community can agree that our players became excellent teammates, athletes, and cheerleaders. The girls were resilient and put up the best fight they could on the court. The season started with six players out of a team of eleven who were new to the sport of volleyball. Our team came to practice each day with a willingness to improve both their fundamental skills and their game strategy. With more than half of our team being beginners, the returning players stepped up to the plate to be strong leaders. They helped lead drills, rally their teammates, and brought a positive energy to every practice/game. Because of the hard work of both returners and beginners in practice, the team played to the best of their abilities in games. The team transitioned from passing the ball over with one touch to three controlled passes, sets, and hits. With their competitive game play, the team earned two wins and a few sets against formidable opponents, like Statesville Christian. The team never gave up and fought for every ball while on the court. Overall, the Woodlawn MS volleyball team learned lots about the sport, each other, and how to be a fantastic and enthusiastic teammate.
2018 Season Recap
To use a somewhat tired cliché, this was a bit of a Cinderella season for the Lady Blazers. Much of the first half of the season was played with just 6 players; which included one Senior, Morgan Klein, no Juniors, and two Seventh Graders. They started off with losses to a strong Christ the King team and The Burlington School. Next, they faced another formidable opponent, Arborbrook, at home, taking them to four sets, and effectively losing the match by a total of four points. This was arguably their best-played match of the entire season. They won three of the next four matches and ended the regular season with a respectable 5-3 league record, their only losses being to the 2A schools in the conference. Overall, they finished 8-7, and drew a bid to the State Playoffs, seeded 8th going in. After cruising past Neuse in the first round, their run was cut short by eventual State Champs Kerr Vance Academy, who entered the tournament with a record of 23-0. Woodlawn wound up 5th Place in the State in the NCISAA 1A Division! Congratulations are due to Co-Captains Morgan Klein and Arielle Trovato for being selected to the All-Conference Team.
August 30: Woodlawn vs Christ the King
The Trailblazers traveled to Christ the King in their first away game of the season. The team had a solid warm-up, but were stunned by the Crusaders' aggressive serves and could not rally back from a large deficit. Toward the end of the match sophomore setter, Abigail W. was able to make few offensive connections with senior, Amelia W. and earned seven kills. The ‘Blazers lost the match, 25-11, 25-10, 25-10. On Thursday, September 1, the team hosts SPAA Conference rival, University Christian, at 5:15pm.
