A Woodlawn Tradition

Track & Field

COME SEE THE DIFFERENCE
Track & Field appeals to a wide variety of athletes – sprinters, distance runners, hurdlers, throwers, and jumpers.  There is an event for everyone and everyone can participate and reach their goals.  Although it’s generally thought of as a collection of individual events, this sport also fosters teamwork – especially in the four relay events where runners must work together to advance a baton around the track oval.  One of the biggest reasons that Woodlawn athletes are drawn to track and field is the opportunity to test themselves against the clock and the measuring tape – all in an effort to record a personal best, a state meet qualifying mark, or even a spot on the Woodlawn All-Time Honor Roll.

Varsity Track and Field at Woodlawn began in 2009, but really accelerated with the completion of the Alumni Track and Field complex in 2016.  Our varsity boys team’s best showing in state competition came at the 2017 NCISAA 1A/2A meet, when they placed third overall and first among 1A schools, led by three-event champion Quinn Schneider ’17.  Our girls’ best state meet finish came in 2019, when they placed fifth overall and second among 1A teams, led by event winners Megan Dailey ’19 and Natalie Boyle ’21.

The Track & Field team competes in the spring season.

MEET OUR Coaches

Boys Varsity

NICK Wilson

The Varsity Boys Track & Field team is coached by Nick Wilson.

“I have been coaching Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track and Field for ten years. I started coaching after I graduated high school. I graduated college from UNCC with degrees in biology and philosophy.” – Coach Wilson

Girls Varsity

Valerie Wrenholt

“I love track and field since there is truly an event for everyone.”

The Varsity Girls Track & Field team is coached by Valerie Wrenholt. Coach Wrenholt is a lifelong runner who has competed in cross country running, Nordic skiing, and track since middle school.

In high school, in Colorado, she won numerous individual and team state titles. She was also a competitive Nordic skier and was a 4-year All-American. She ran cross country for one season at Dartmouth College and competed for four years in Nordic skiing at Dartmouth, including captaining the team during her senior year.

She previously coached varsity girls cross country at Providence Day School in Charlotte.

“Sport is a microcosm of life; it teaches many valuable lessons, such as persistence, dedication, and teamwork. As a coach, I want to help athletes reach their personal best and meet their goals, even if that doesn’t always mean winning. Further, I want to help athletes find running rewarding for the rest of their lives.” — Coach Wrenholt

NCISAA 1A/2A All-State Athletes (individual event winners):

Megan Dailey - triple jump (new school record) - (plus 2nd places in 100m and long jump)

Natalie Boyle - pole vault (plus 5th place in high jump)

There were plenty of Trailblazer highlights in this state meet - seven new school records were set despite the hot conditions on both days. Our girls were led once again by senior Megan Dailey, who saved her best meet for last. She set a new school record in each of the three events she entered, and earned a first place (triple jump) as well as two second places (long jump and 100m dash) for a total of 26 points. Sophomore Natalie Boyle was also impressive, racking up 14 points by clearing seven feet to win the pole vault and four and a half feet to place 5th in the high jump. 8th grader Adina Jacobson scored in two different events, taking 5th place in the 1600m and 7th place in the 800m. Sophomore Aubrey Dantzler placed 8th in the discus to complete the scoring for our girls team. Additionally, Ella Williams set a PR in the shot put, placing her at #2 on the all-time Woodlawn list. Kasey Price broke her own school record in the 400m to qualify for the finals in the #2 spot, but was unable to compete on the second day due to injury.

On the boys side, our relay teams took the spotlight. On the first day, our 4x800m relay squad of Wes Neal, Aiden Lemons, Gael Garza, and Jackson McGeough took 5th place with a new school record time. Then on day two, the 4x100m team of Jack Hager, Ethan Mason, RJ Klein, and Jesse Jacobson took 3rd place with another school record performance. And in the final event of the meet, an exhausted 4x400m relay team of RJ, Ethan, Jack, and Wes ran an epic race to finish in 2nd place. RJ and Jesse both scored in the 400m finals, taking 5th and 7th places respectively. Jackson set a huge PR in the 3200m run to finish in 4th place, and then came back the next day to take 7th place in the 1600m. Aiden set a new PR in that 1600m race, while Gael also improved his personal best in the 3200m run. Jack set a PR in the final 200m race of his Woodlawn career. Our throwers also had an excellent meet, with Dylan White and Ethan Essex scoring in the 7th and 8th spots in the discus competition. In the shot put, both Dylan and Ethan set personal bests, but James Folds unleashed a heave of 38 feet 1 inch, improving on his PR by almost two feet and setting a new school record.
