Middle School Harriers Run Big at Final Meet of the Season, Collect the Champion and Runner-Up Titles
The Middle School cross country teams hosted the SPAA Conference Championship meet at Fisher Farm October 19, 2017. The Girls stunned the field of 5 teams by dominating with a final score of 12, followed by their closest opponent, Hickory Christian with 18. Running personal records on a very difficult, historically slow course, our leading duo of Nadia R. and Ava S. pocketed 3rd and 4th place finishes with a 14:38 clock time. Not far behind, and with a massive surge to the front pack Amelia A. crossed the line in 5th and locked in our win. Not much further back in the pack was Saiya P. , Maddie F. and Kate T., all 5th graders, who knew going in that we needed each of them to help push the scoring and they did not disappoint! Two more PRs from Piper B. (who PRs every single race) and Analiese R., along with team member Zara S., showed Woodlawn’s seriously intimidating depth of talent.
On the boys side, virtual scoring showed it was going to be a matter of just a few points that separated 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Running smart were our two eighth graders, Aiden L. and David R. Using the entire 3k distance to track down their opponents, they passed the needed runners in the finish stretch to secure the very much needed points to set up a solid score. But, we needed just one more place — our 3rd runner! Around the corner we were all never so happy to see Sajan P., just a 5th grader, nab a 13th place finish giving us a one point edge over North Hills for second place! Royce C. was just one spot behind in 14th, there to secure a very essential spot if a tie were to happen (and it almost did). All four boys ran their personal records, ending their season with a runner-up conference championship trophy.
